Pillar guide · 10 min read

LinkedIn hands you a scoreboard for free. Most reps have never opened it.

The Social Selling Index is LinkedIn's own 0–100 score for how well you sell on the platform. Four pillars. Updated daily. This is the plain-English guide to what it measures — and the tactical weekly moves that push your score past 75.

Chapter 01

What the SSI actually is

our Social Selling Index is a 0–100 score made up of four equally-weighted pillars, 25 points each. LinkedIn recalculates it daily and shows it to you at linkedin.com/sales/ssi. It's free. You don't need Sales Navigator. Nobody at your company will tell you your number — you have to go look.

The four pillars are the entire game: establish a professional brand, find the right people, engage with insights, and build relationships. The score updates fast enough to be a real feedback loop — change one behavior on Monday, see the matching pillar move by Friday.

Chapter 02

The four pillars — and what to do about each

Each pillar is worth 25 points. Nobody scores full marks on all four — the trick is knowing which two you're weakest on and doing the boring work for a month.

01

Establish a professional brand

What LinkedIn measures: Profile completeness, thought-leadership posts, and endorsements.

  • Rewrite your headline to describe who you help — not your title.
  • Add an 'About' section written for your buyer, not for HR.
  • Publish one post per week that teaches something specific.
A 5-point week looks like: Buyers stop scrolling past your name in their feed.
02

Find the right people

What LinkedIn measures: How efficiently you search, save, and view accounts inside your ICP.

  • Build 3 saved searches (Sales Nav or free) for your ICP.
  • View 10 target profiles per day — LinkedIn counts this.
  • Follow decision-makers before you connect. It warms the outreach.
A 5-point week looks like: Your outbound list is 100 people you actually researched — not 10,000 you scraped.
03

Engage with insights

What LinkedIn measures: Comments, shares, and reactions on other people's content.

  • Leave 5 substantive comments per day on ICP posts. 'Great post!' does not count.
  • Share one industry article per week with your own 2-sentence POV.
  • React to prospects' company updates within the first hour they post.
A 5-point week looks like: Three buyers you've never spoken to know your name by Friday.
04

Build relationships

What LinkedIn measures: Connections with senior people, acceptance rate, and internal-team ties.

  • Send 5 personalised connection requests per day — reference their work.
  • Connect with 3 colleagues per week. Internal ties count toward the score.
  • Turn accepted connections into a 60-second video DM, not a pitch deck.
A 5-point week looks like: Your acceptance rate crosses 50% — because you stopped copy-pasting.
Chapter 03

What score to aim for

Most reps sit between 40 and 55 and don't realise it. Above 70 puts you in the top ~20% of your industry. Above 85 is rare — usually full-time creators or founder-sellers who post daily. For a working AE, 75 sustained is the healthy target: high enough to feel the compounding, low enough that you're not trading selling time for score-chasing.

40–55

Average

Where most reps live. You're on LinkedIn but you're not selling on it yet.

70+

Top 20%

You've been showing up consistently. Buyers start recognising your name.

75 sustained

The sweet spot

Enough momentum to see inbound. Not so much that you've quit your day job to post.

Reps in the top quartile of SSI create 45% more opportunities than reps in the bottom quartile.

Chapter 04

The scoreboard trap

Here's how reps blow this: they check their SSI once, panic because it's 42, and spend a weekend gaming the score. They spam connect requests to push Relationships. They reshare everything to push Insights. Their score jumps to 68. Their pipeline doesn't move an inch.

SSI updates daily. Your quota does not. Guess which one gets more attention when you fall in love with the dashboard.

The pillars measure the right behaviors. Do the behaviors and the score follows.

Chase the score directly and you end up with a great dashboard and an empty forecast.
Chapter 05

A weekly cadence that moves all four pillars

Skip the theory. Do this every week for a month. Most reps who try it see SSI move 10–15 points in the first 30 days.

Chapter 06

The pillar most reps under-index on

Three of the four pillars are mostly maintenance — fix your headline, view profiles, send connection requests. Boring, but doable. Then there's Engage with insights, which rewards posts and comments every single week. It's the fastest-moving pillar and the one most reps skip.

Why? Writing feels slow. You stare at a blank composer, type two sentences, delete them, and go back to Slack. Meanwhile you just left a 45-minute discovery call with three genuine insights about your buyer's world — and shared none of them.

You already have the raw material. What you're missing is a system to get it out of your head and onto the feed before the next call starts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the LinkedIn Social Selling Index?
The Social Selling Index (SSI) is a 0–100 score LinkedIn assigns you based on four equally-weighted pillars: establish a professional brand, find the right people, engage with insights, and build relationships. You can check yours for free at linkedin.com/sales/ssi.
Is a high SSI score actually correlated with more pipeline?
SSI is a proxy, not a KPI. LinkedIn's own data shows reps above 75 create more opportunities and hit quota more often — but the score itself doesn't close deals, the behaviors it measures do. Treat SSI as a weekly diagnostic, not a target you optimise directly.
What's a good SSI score for a B2B sales rep?
Anything above 70 puts you in the top ~20% of your industry. Most reps sit between 40 and 55. Getting to 75+ typically takes 60–90 days of consistent profile work, weekly posts, and daily engagement inside your ICP.
How often does the SSI update?
Daily. That makes it a fast feedback loop — change one behavior (say, commenting on 10 ICP posts a day) and you'll see the matching pillar move within a week.
Do I need Sales Navigator to see my SSI?
No. The SSI page at linkedin.com/sales/ssi is free for anyone with a LinkedIn profile. Sales Navigator gives you deeper targeting for the People and Relationships pillars, but the score itself is not gated behind it.
How does SelloWise help me raise my SSI?
Specifically the 'Engage with insights' pillar — the fastest-moving one. SelloWise turns your sales calls and objection notes into publishable LinkedIn posts in minutes, which drives shares, comments, and profile views. See the CTA at the bottom.
